Weird and Wonderful: Abandoned Places

Posted on June 19, 2013 by Leave a comment

Check out some of the abandoned places worldwide.
Have you ever visited to any one of them?

1) Kolmanskop in Namib Desert:

kolmanskop

Once a small but rich mining village located in Southern Africa, it is now a ghost town. After World War I, the town slowly declined and it was permanently abandoned in 1954.  Ever want to visit? Remember to get a tourist permit if you are ever going to visit. You are going to have to trek through houses in knee-deep sand!

2) Sarajevo Olympic Bobsleigh and Luge Track:

tracks

Located in Bosnia and Herzegovina, this bobsleigh and luge track was built just for the 1984 Winter Olympics. After the winter Olympics, the track was used for World Cup competitions until the Yugoslav wars in 1991 and the Siege of Sarajevo. Because of the damage done to the tracks, it was then abandoned. Today, you can see traces of fighting holes from the war.

3) Nara Dreamland in Japan:

Built in 1961, the theme park was inspired by Disneyland in California. The theme park had several rides including one that was similar to The Cyclone at Coney Island. The theme park officially closed on August 31, 2006 due to not having a lot of visitors. However, visiting this abandoned park is not easy since there are securities.

4) Cincinnati Subway Depot:

cincinnati

Described as “one of the city’s biggest embarrassments,” the construction of this subway project took place in early 20th century but it was never completed. So why was it never finished? At the end of World War I, costs had increased significantly but the city still began construction by using bonds. The bonds, however, ran out and the city had no choice but to end the construction leaving 7 miles of subway dug or graded abandoned.
